Newfoundland Transshipment Limited (NTL) was formed in 1996 to oversee the construction and operation of a major marine transshipment facility located in Whiffen Head, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador. The facility is one of 19 transshipment terminals in North America operated by International-Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT) of New Orleans, LA. Construction of the Terminal was completed in the fall of 1998 and the operation has been ongoing since that time. The NTL facility was specifically designed to handle crude oil production from the Grand Banks offshore oil fields. The terminal can store about 3,000,000 barrels of crude in its tank farm and can handle tankers up to 190,000 tonnes displacement at its unloading and loading docks.
Ameil Constructors Limited has an ongoing working relationship with NTL-IMTT including work scopes such as pipe fabrication, blasting and painting, insulation as well as work on major projects; i.e., Loading Arms Replacement. Recently Ameil has contracts including line handling for tieing up and untieing tankers as well as maintenance and labour work at the terminal including snowclearing, grounds keeping, and general labour duties. Ameil personnel at IMTT are also trained first responders in the case of oil spills, working under direction of the ECRC~SIMEC spill response agency.
