VALE is a global mining and ore processing company at work in 30 countries. In Newfoundland and Labrador it operates the Long Harbour Processing Plant (LHPP), which began operating in 2014 and now employs about 500 people. The LHPP processes concetrated ore, which is shipped to Long Harbour year round from VALE’s Voisey’s Bay mine in northern Labrador. The plant uses a new hydrometallurgical (hydromet) process to produce nickel, copper and cobalt.
Ameil Constructors Limited completed various pipe fabrication and plant installation projects for the Long Harbour facility during its construction and in now operating a long-term contract to refurbish mandrel plates and dip tubes used in the hydromet process. Ameil invested in specialized equipment and developed special welding processes to ensure quality refurbishment and repairs meet VALE’s requirements.
